Drowning Man 04:28
DROWNING MAN I’m a drowning man and they’re dragging the lake. Right down to the bottom, looking for my heart. She’s as sweet as cake, she's as sweet as freedom. I’m a drowning man, drowning is my art. I’m a drowning man, drowning is my art. My days flash by me, I'm trying not to lose my head, trying not to sink. She’s holding out her hand, from the jetty where she stands, but it’s the soft words that she said - sent me down to the riverbed. I’m a drowning man, I was a drowning boy and it never was my wish, to be hooked by you at all. I’ll be your floating toy until I join the fish, I’m a drowning man, counting fathoms as I fall. I’m a drowning man, counting fathoms as I fall. My days flash by me, I'm trying not to lose my head, trying not to sink. She’s holding out her hand, from the jetty where she stands, but it’s the soft words that she said - sent me down to the riverbed.

Howlin' Wolf 03:48
HOWLIN’ WOLF Howlin’ Wolf at the door of my memories. Muddy Waters wash that flotsam down to the sea, to meander and dissolve in deltas and whirlpools of lovers that flew. Spinning faces in monochrome, but I remember the colour of you. And it’s blue. Man In Black casts a shadow across my road, as blind as Lemon, as heavy as Ledbelly’s load. Cuts a chasm that I have to bridge, over a deep well of truth. My road is dusty, my road is grey, but I remember the colour of you. And it’s blue Lightnin’ Sam strikes a bolt into my brain. That spark of light starts to ease the rain and parts the clouds, lifts a shroud, as I forget you - the sky turns blue…

CAPE CORNWALL Heading out west down to Cape Cornwall. Heading out west to the edge of the world. Down to the sea to cleanse my soul, where the oceans meet and the stack stands tall. Fosseway took us straight and true. Motorway was nothing but a crawling queue, but we swoop and dive over Bodmin Moor, flashing past valley, flashing past tor. It feels like thunder, looks like rain. Won’t be long ‘til we’re back on the cliffs again. And my heart is eased when I hear that call and head out with my girl down to Cape Cornwall. The sky above was as black as my heart. Moon and the stars tried to play their part, to light our way down the deep carved lanes, to the shelter of sleep. It feels like thunder, looks like rain. Won’t be long ‘til we’re back on the cliffs again. And my heart is eased when I hear that call and head out with my girl down to Cape Cornwall. Then in the morning with our backs to the sun, we stare out over the great ocean. High above the crashing surf, poised like divers on the edge of the earth.

Fractal Line 02:57
FRACTAL LINE I lay and listen to my old broken heart, beat and stutter in the quiet of the night. You lie wrapped in the spell of sleep, without a crease or fold. I have nothing except your hand to hold. So wake up and let’s go wandering around the ragged edge of our isle. And trace the fractal line of our love, I’ll trace the faded line of your smile. Moon arrived with a bouquet of stars, to the fallow cry of the Jupiter owls. You lie spun in your web of dreams, all filament and dew. I have nothing except the night and you. So wake up and let’s go wandering around the ragged edge of the truth. And trace the fractal line of our love, I’ll trace the scar of our youth, I’ll trace the scar of our youth. And we'll sing.....

LIGHTNING STRIKES THE SEA Take the winding lane to the lee and whisper my secrets to the shivering sea. Put wishes in bottles, float words on the waves. Leviathan’s waiting with a watery grave. And I pray you’ll find your way to my arms some day. What if the lightning strikes the sea, or heartless waves roll us endlessly in the deep? From my shoreline of bones, the surf of my skin, two beacons shine out above a sea cavern grin. I'm scanning the ocean, sending a sign. I look for your sail upon the distant blue line. And I pray you’ll find your way to my shore some day. What if the lightning strikes the sea, or heartless waves roll us endlessly in the deep? The Siren’s call is sweet and long. The whales are singing their ghostly song. The wind is whistling aimlessly. Their chorus is gathering to bring you to me.
6.
LONG WAY HOME Climb up the rise to look from the ridge. The future’s a ghost in a valley soaked with mist. It’s a long way home, it’s a long way home. Strayed from the path, lured by faint tracks. Been following sheep, I can’t find my way back. It’s a long way home, it’s a long way home. Do I look for a star or a familiar face, or toss a coin at the next fork on the way? It’s a long way home. It’s a long way back home. It’s a long, long way. There’s a buzzard on a post, crows in the sky. I'm circled by hills, wish I could fly. It’s a long way home, it’s a long way home. Through forests of uncertainty, meadows of deceit, got my eye on the horizon and the path beneath my feet. It’s a long way home, it’s a long way home. If I find my way through the trees to a welcoming light, a sweet smell on the breeze, still a long way home. A long way back home, it’s a long, long way I used to paint pictures, used to sing songs. Planted a garden, now I’m back on the road…

SWEET BLINDNESS OF SUMMER Lost in the sweet blindness of summer. The warm cocoon of insect song. The grass entwined with knotted flowers. A sun blushed sky and ebbing clouds. A breeze that stole our beading brows, had the sound of distant thunder, but we lay cloaked, under the sweet blindness of summer. Lost in the sweet blindness of summer. Branches crazed across a jet scarred sky. The sun cast diminished shadows, as we lay in a meadow all in bronzed decline. A breeze that stole our glistening dew, had the scent of storms and greying blue, but I’m lost in the sweet blindness of you. The sweet blindness of you.

Freight Cars 03:50
FREIGHT CARS The whistle blew like a howling owl across the tracks and the road. The windows shook in the sultry night, as the freight cars shunted and rolled, as the freight cars shunted and rolled. I lay in bed listening to Luxembourg, when Your Royal Ruler just said, that the King had died, that we all should cry, as the freight cars shunted and rolled. My daddy worked on the railway tracks. Mum pulled the cable and drums in a factory out on the edge of town, where the freight cars shunted and rolled, where the freight cars shunted and rolled. I lay in bed and I dreamed of you, though we hadn’t yet met. I made bold plans to be a guitarman, as the freight cars shunted and rolled. We had no hobos, no junkies, just the stale smell of ennui. So I dreamed my dreams of escape, from the ghost of this town, from the ghost of the sound of the freight cars that shunted and rolled. All those years my heart was breaking, all this time I’ve been faking. Still I dream my dreams of escape, from the ghost of this town, from the ghost of the sound of the freight cars that shunted and rolled.

Shake 04:28
SHAKE Shake baby, shake your head with passion. Make baby, make some statement of fashion. And give me a smile, 'cause I broke down again. Could take us a while, 'cause I broke down again. There's an escaper's moon this evening. I'm changing the tracks, all of the facts. We're out of here baby, let's scatter the tacks on the road. Why don't you take my black dog walking down to the dark lake, along the deep ghost trail. And leave him a while, 'cause I broke down again. Give me a smile, 'cause I broke down again. There's an escaper's moon this evening. I'm changing the tracks, all of the facts, We're out of here baby, let's scatter the tacks on the road.

DIFFERENT DAWN Gripped by interminable night, these velvet hours are lonely. I look for shooting stars, but the stars are only satellites in the northern sky, reflecting light from the other side of the earth. And that’s where you are. A world between us, of crusts and cavernous voids filled up with the dust of ages, the rust of our history. My mind is mining but it seems so dark. I close my eyes, the night is torn. Sleep surrenders you to a different dawn. I hold my breath, until the moon is gone. Your dreams all disappear into a different dawn. You wake up to a different dawn while my eyes grow sleepy. Strange birds sing to you. Here the bats dive steeply out of the darkness. My collar’s turned to the cold, the sun is warming you on the other side of the world. And that’s where you are. A planet between you and me, to circumnavigate across becalmed seas of sorrow, deserts of dry doubt. My mind is flying but it seems so far. I close my eyes, the night is torn. Sleep surrenders you to a different dawn. I hold my breath, until the moon is gone. Your dreams all disappear into a different dawn.

Winter 03:20
WINTER It’s winter. The hushed snow, ice tracery on our window. Life slumbers beneath the cold and crisping leaves. And the trees are draped with diamonds on their north sides, as we drive with some uncertainty into a rising sun. In the winter. In the winter, we gather around the hearth of your heart. Our blood and bones share the same fragility. Our eyes glisten and sparkle and laughter cracks the silence, as we love with some uncertainty beneath a slender moon. In the winter. Come spring. Come heat haze days. Come trees ablaze in red. The planet turns, so our lives drift slowly ‘round, while our words and wishes orbit in the silence, as we wait with some uncertainty. In the winter.

about

‘The Fallow Cry Of The Jupiter Owls’ is the haunting debut from Jupiter Owls.

Jupiter Owls play a chilled mix of Folk/Pop tinged with Americana and Country. Their bittersweet, finely crafted songs are woven through the delicate interplay of acoustic and electric guitars and tell tales of melancholy and heartache. Inspired by artists such as James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel and Nick Drake, their sound is evocative of the early seventies West Coast scene: West Coast meets West Country if you like. The album was recorded over two years in the cupboard under John’s stairs with John and Ryan playing all instruments.
